Equivalency recognition - Diploma of college studies (DEC) or baccalaureate

If you have successfully completed all of the nursing courses and practicums set out in the DEC or BAC program, you may apply to have the equivalency of your training or diploma recognized.


To submit an application

1. Fill out the Equivalency recognition application form for OIIAQ admission purposes – DEC in nursing / BAC in nursing [


2. Gather together the following documents:
• Birth certificate or proof of immigrant status, Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status if you were born outside Canada.
• Recent photograph (passport format), i.e. 50 mm by 70 mm (2 inches wide by 2¾ inches high).
• Secondary studies diploma (DES) or equivalent.
• Diploma of professional nursing training (as applicable).
• Most recent transcript of grades in nursing courses.
• Transcript of nursing course hours (as applicable).
• Official document certifying the years of work experience in the nursing field (as applicable).

3. Enclose a cheque or money order in the amount of $150 (non-refundable) payable to “OIIAQ” covering the file opening fee.

4. If you have been:
• Found guilty of a criminal offence in Quebec, elsewhere in Canada or in a foreign country, attach a copy of the judgment.
• The subject of a disciplinary decision issued in Quebec by the disciplinary committee of a professional order (i.e. association), attach a copy of the decision.
• Found guilty of a penal offence, attach a copy of the judgment.

5. Drop off your complete application with the OIIAQ receptionist or mail to:

File review procedure

The following steps will be taken once your equivalency application has been received:

1. The Admissions Department determines whether your file is in order.

2. An admissions officer contacts you to inform you about the status of your application.

3. The Education Committee, which meets monthly, reviews your equivalency recognition application.

4. If your application is in order, you will receive a written confirmation, including a notice asking you to take the OIIAQ’s exam (as applicable).

5. You receive the notice of dues form, which you must complete and return to us, together with a cheque or money order which covers your dues until March 31 of the current year (please contact the Admission Department).

6. Upon receipt of your duly completed notice of dues, your application will be submitted for approval to the Executive Committee, which usually meets once a month.

7. A permit number is assigned to you.

8. Your “member in good standing” card is printed and mailed to you.



• Only applications accompanied by original documents or “certified true copies” of the originals will be accepted.


• To certify that your knowledge of French is deemed sufficient to practice professionally, the OIIAQ may require one of the following types of proof, in accordance with section 35 of the Charter of the French language


o A certificate issued by the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF)  indicating successful completion of the French-language exam.
o An official document stating that you successfully completed at least three years of full-time study in French at the secondary or post-secondary level.
o An official document stating that you successfully completed the French as a first language exam in your fourth or fifth year of secondary studies.
o A secondary studies diploma (DES) obtained in Quebec after 1985-1986.
